Best New Car Park for Lincoln Wednesday, August 14th, 2019

Lincoln City’s Central Multi Storey Car Park (MSCP), with six-levels housing 1001 spaces, was under the spotlight earlier this year, when it was entered into the category for Best New Car Park in the British Car Park Awards 2019. This site-specific award recognises outstanding car park design.

Lincoln city centre was transformed in 2018 thanks to the completion of the new bus station, the new multi-storey car park and the changes to the forecourt of the city’s train station.

With Lincoln’s Central Car Park winning Best New Car Park this was another accolade for this high profile project. In 2018 John Roberts Architects landed Civil Engineering Project of the Year 2018 at the East Midlands Celebrating Construction Awards. The bus station has also become the only bus station in the east of England to be awarded the Safer Bus Station Award. Then in 2019 Willmott Dixon won the top accolade in the Infrastructure category at the East Midlands RICS Awards for the £30 million Lincoln Transportation HUB.

The entire project was about collaboration at an early stage with initial discussions starting in 2014 across the contracts and design teams. The facades of the MSCP needed to look modern, streamlined and built to last using environmentally friendly materials. With a combination of materials used like Decorative Mesh and Perforated Rainscreen Panels through to uniquely coloured Solar Shading Aerofoil profiles the effect was striking and hence has attracted a lot of interest at a local, regional and national level.

£30M Project 0fficially Opened Ahead of Schedule Friday, November 24th, 2017

WPL complete a £30 million Multi Storey Car Park (MSCP) in a prime location adjacent to Lincoln Train Station to form a new centralised hub for accessing Lincoln City Centre. The MSCP has been built to bring trade to an already busy City Centre set to rival Britain’s best shopping experiences.

Last week and two months ahead of schedule, the official opening of the first four floors came just in time for the Christmas lights switch-on and will be a great for festive shoppers so that footfall to City Centre businesses will be boosted. There is still some work to be finished but everything will be fully operational over the next few weeks in the build up to the Christmas holiday period.

Lincoln Transport Hub includes a 1,000 space MSCP with elevations featuring WPL’s Decorative Mesh, Alucabond Cladding, uniquely coloured Solar Shading Aerofoil profiles & Aluminium Perforated Rainscreen Panels. These products are all supported by WPL’s Alu-Structure Range of support mullions and transoms to achieve a versatile arrangement of various spans & neat connection detail between components and the building main frame.

Managing Director Richard Rowson said “The completion of this major transportation project is down to the tremendous commitment and dedication of the whole team to deliver to the highest standards and I am very proud of every single person who has been involved.”

The final array of WPL products are all brought together to create an absolutely stunning façade which looks modern, streamlined and built to last using environmentally friendly materials.

University Design Transformation Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

At the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), WPL had a great opportunity to work alongside Design Engine Architects to install perforated panel cladding.

The final effect at AUB produces a unique façade emulated across two of the main teaching buildings and more of the same across the campus. The team had bounds of artistic licence, where our more usual symmetry was set aside in favour of this totally random installation with perforations of differing positions and diameter.

Because the perforated panels have a visually open area the existing unsightly brick façade that had been painted black is present behind the silver metallic façade and offers a very attractive contrast in colours.

The façade also doubles up as a solar shading system for the areas of glazing to reduce solar gain into the building whilst maintaining the optimal amount of natural light into the building. The benefits also extend to the reduction of energy used to maintain ideal room temperatures which in turn is more environmentally friendly.

Perforated circles are a popular choice for architects specifying perforated panels but what differs in the AUB pattern is the unique arrangement of varying hole sizes.

The building is rectangular as is the existing brick façade so the circles create distinction against what was previously quite a dull looking building.

WPL’s perforated panel cladding is used as a decorative façade at AUB which gave the building a new lease of life but this type of cladding is a very versatile product. It is used in a large array of applications from architectural feature facades right through to cladding that needs to meet high technical performance specifications like for example sound or weather proof barriers.

The before and after images of the two buildings are exceptionally striking: WPLUK – AUB Halls, Perforated Rainscreen Panels – Before and After

Coast to Coast Team Challenge Countdown Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

Our MD, Richard Rowson, is now in full training for an epic 144 mile Coast to Coast cycle with mountain biking buddies Simon McLean, Steven Spencer, Michael & David Crouch. They have called their team ‘C2C4JEN’ and are going to cycle from Whitehaven to Tynemouth from 15th to 17th June, so there are less than two months to countdown! They have risen to the challenge to support Cystic Fibrosis because David’s daughter and Mike’s sister Jenny lost her fight to the disease last February.

Jenny Crouch was a truly inspirational person who passed away aged 34 on 27 February 2016 after battling cystic fibrosis. She was a dedicated fundraiser for research into cystic fibrosis, appearing on the popular children’s show Blue Peter and raising thousands while at St Joseph’s RC High School in Horwich, where she was nominated for the Greater Manchester Police Young Citizen Award.

Jenny became a teacher and continued raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis. For 11 years she worked at St Peter and St Paul’s RC Primary School in Bolton where she was RE and sports co-ordinator as well as a class teacher. She lived her life to the full and had some amazing times and adventures with her friends. She absolutely loved her teaching and living independently but her health had been getting progressively worse and in the summer of 2015, she contracted a common cold and needed oxygen to breathe. She had to give up her job and a lung transplant was the only treatment option left, but she died before one became available.

Now a year after Jenny passed away the ‘C2C4JEN’ Team want to remember her and the work she had always done in raising money for research into cystic fibrosis.

All five members will have to train very hard over the next few months as they want to complete the cycle in 3 days cycling which will take them on minor roads, mountain bike tracks, and bridleways. There are some hard climbs along the way with one of the highest points at over 2,000 feet. With an average speed of around 7 miles per hour that is just less than 7 hours cycling per day but the team are up for the challenge to raise at least £3,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Anti Bribery Policy Saturday, December 17th, 2016

It is WPL (UK) Limited’s policy to carry out business fairly, honestly and openly both at home and abroad. As such we have a zero tolerance approach towards bribery in any part of our operation. Bribery is defined as a promise offer or gift (financial or otherwise) to bring about the improper performance of a function or activity. Examples of this would be such as offering a potential client a gift such as a weekend away on the condition they do business with us. To meet this commitment the Company has the following systems in place to counter bribery:

Risk assessments will be documented to assess the levels of risk the Company is exposed to in its business, particularly its sales operations.

A clear entertainment and expenses policy that sets out that only reasonable entertaining and gift giving expenses will be accommodated by the Company and should not induce either party to contract.

All new employees will receive, as part of their induction, training on preventing, detecting and reporting bribery.

A whistle-blowing policy is also in place. If you are concerned that bribery has occurred, may occur or is likely to occur we would encourage you to report your concerns.

If you suspect or if you are asked to accept or offer a bribe you must report this immediately to the Managing Director, Richard Rowson. The Company values a proactive anti-bribery stance by any employee.

As we take our obligations to prevent bribery being committed very seriously, any breach of our anti-bribery policy or procedures will be considered to be gross misconduct and may result in your dismissal. Where you have been involved in or suspected of involvement in bribery that is not connected with this Company, this may still affect your suitability for on-going employment with us.

Whistleblowing Policy
Introduction
All organisations face the risk of things going wrong or of unknowingly harbouring malpractice. The Company believes it has a duty to identify such situations and take the appropriate measures to remedy them. By encouraging a culture of openness within our organisation the Company believes it can help prevent malpractice. Furthermore, by knowing about malpractice at an early stage the Company stands a good chance of taking the necessary steps to safeguard the interests of all staff and protect the organisation. In short, the Company encourages you to ‘blow the whistle’ on suspected malpractice.

Please be aware that this policy is not the procedure for general grievances. If any employee has a complaint about their own personal circumstances then they would use the normal grievance procedure. However for anyone with concerns about malpractice within the Company the procedure is outlined in this policy.

Suspected malpractice
The Company encourages you to report suspected malpractice in relation to our activities. We construe malpractice widely and this includes:

  • Any illegal activity at the Company;
  • Any activity that causes the Company to breach its legal obligations;
  • Any activity that causes the Company to endanger the health and safety of any person;
  • Any activity that damages the environment;
  • Any attempt to wilfully conceal any information that tends to show malpractice.

You are not required to obtain evidence of malpractice before raising your concern. As such you must not commit an act or acts of misconduct, breach company rules or damage the Company in any way in order to obtain information. The Company is committed to ensuring that you work in an environment in which you can raise concerns and there is no question of you having to prove anything. The Company will support employees, who with the reasonable belief that it is in the public interest to do so raise concerns under this policy, even if they turn out to be mistaken.

How to raise your concern internally
If you feel able to do so you should tell the Managing Director, Richard Rowson, about your concern. There is no special procedure for doing this – you can tell Richard Rowson about the problem, or put it in writing if you prefer.

How the Company will respond
After you have raised your concern the Company will decide how to respond in a responsible and appropriate manner under this policy. Usually, this will involve making internal enquiries first, but it may be necessary to carry out an investigation at a later stage, which may be formal or informal depending on the nature of the concern raised.

As far as possible, the Company will keep you informed of the decisions taken and the outcome of any enquiries and investigations carried out. However, the Company will not be able to inform you of any matters that would infringe the duty of confidentiality owed to others.

If you ask for a matter to be treated in confidence the Company will respect your request and only make disclosures with your consent.

Raising your concern externally (exceptional cases)
The main purpose of this policy is to give you the opportunity and protection you need to raise your concerns internally. The Company would expect that in almost all cases raising concerns internally would be the most appropriate action for you to take.

However, if you feel you cannot raise your concerns internally and you honestly and reasonably believe the information and any allegations are true, you should consider raising the matter with the appropriate regulator.

If you have good reasons for not using the internal or regulatory disclosure procedures described above, you may consider making wider disclosure by reporting the matter to the police or to the media, for example. However, whistleblowers who make wider disclosures of this type will only be protected in certain circumstances. The Company recommends that you take legal advice before following this course of action since we believe it will be in your own interests to do so.

Protection for whistleblowers
You may be worried that by reporting your concerns you will be opening yourself up to victimisation or detriment, or risking your job security. However, all staff benefit from statutory protection if they raise concerns in the right way and do so with the reasonable belief that raising the concern is in the public interest. This protection means that employees must not be dismissed or suffer any detrimental treatment as a result of raising a concern. As it will be in your own interests to do so we would encourage you in particular to ensure you have a reasonable belief that the disclosure you wish to make is in the public interest as this is one of the requirements that must be met in order to obtain the statutory protection mentioned earlier.

Staff must not threaten or retaliate against whistleblowers in any way. This will be regarded as gross misconduct and may result in those involved being dismissed without notice or payment in lieu of notice.

If you believe that you have suffered any detrimental treatment, you should inform your manager immediately. If the matter is not remedied you should raise it formally in writing to the Managing Director, Richard Rowson.

BIM standard raises the bar at WPL Friday, December 16th, 2016

WPL (UK) is proud to be one of the first Architectural Facade companies to be accredited with the prestigious accolade for Building Information Modelling (BIM) to PAS 1192:2013 Level 2.

Independently verified by Ocean, our BIM Co-ordinator Michael Lovell went through several days of intense scrutiny about WPL’s processes and procedures. This was the final stage in the build-up to being fully assessed over several months. Mike commented that “Despite the assessor recognising the amount of effort that had gone into the preparation work and being presented with some of the best evidence ever seen, it was still a tense moment before being told we had passed.”

The requirements of BIM Level 2 were clearly proved to be full integrated into WPL’s business management systems and embedded across the company’s operations which work to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Through this independent certification to BIM Level 2 this will allow the company to provide faster responses to tender questions and manage digital information much more efficiently. It will also keep WPL one step ahead of the current requirements expected of everyone following the Government’s BIM mandate.

The management team at WPL (UK) have always been were keen to become accredited as the company works alongside more and more high profile contractors, architects and clients. Geoff Andrews, Design Manager said “As we strive to differentiate ourselves from competitors BIM Level 2 certification gives specifiers much more confidence in using our design, manufacturing and installation services.”

In striving to continually improve members of the WPL team regular attend Supply Chain events like those organised by the North West BIM Region Group and BIM4SMEs where they can share experiences of best practice and keep up to speed with BIM.
